Photography

The Towers Petronas, Kaula Lampur, Malaysia
I took up photography as a hobby when I my dad 'gave' me his camera in my first year of college, after some gentle persuasion. Well anyway, it's an old Pentax SLR (ME Super), which was later updated with a zoom lens after more tactful persuasion. I like to take my camera with me whenever I travel, and I have traveled a fair bit. It will be nice for me to share my photos and experiences. One of the advantages of having suthufied a lot is that that you can make 'interesting' conversation with people, if someone says, oh I went there for a holiday there, you can come up with a reply like 'Cool..did you see this', implying I have been there myself, expressed most discreetly. Or, not so discreetly.
Well, anyway, most of the satisfaction in photography comes from loading the lens, adjusting the aperture, shutter speed, setting the fim etc.. The details. I dislike digital cameras. It's good if you want a lot of photos quick and cheap, but just kills all the fun. The photo you get from a digicam just depends upon how much money you have poured into it in the first place and the button you choose to press. It's like substituting a grand piano with a synth. You don't choose the synth even if it does come up with better music, because, well, that really isn't the point.
My mom keeps telling me to write a short description behind each photo, to look back fondly on them when I am old (atleast older). It is also a useful way to showoff to visitors, especially if I am not around, they can quickly see whats in the back and tell story behind picture. But it's a tiresom thing to do. Also, since they are paper prints, the chances are that no one really is going to look at it. It's going to sit in some corner somewhere. So, I got all my prints digitized. That makes things soo much easier. Trust me. From now on - photos, photo trivia, photo tales and teletubbies. Obviously, I was kidding about the teletubbies :D.

PS: I thought of creating a separate photo-blog but didn't do it for 2 reasons. I prefer having all my stuff in a single place. Updating 2 blogs can get really boring. Better to update 1 frequently, then 2 not at all.

Wow..Nicee...kept craning my neck..as if im actually seeing the skyscraper...Too Coooool.

Oh n u know i have traveled a lot too with my parents. And i hav this habit of not remembering many little details.. like the names of the places, the location of it, the route to get there, wat all u can observe en route. Also my travellin is limited due to several interruptions (amma's legs r paining, or dad's phone call etc etc) Then when i boast abt my journey.. i get this question.. in between my monologue.."oh have u been there?" and im like "err.. no" and the person continues.."aah u should have, there is blah blah blah" and im like..grrrr show off! lights up later in ma head that we are talkin abt the same thing! Yah.. that same oldd..tall.. towerish thing in paris.. yah that has those three floors.. and is visible from my hotel too...tat cums in tat moviee too...."emm.. eiffel tower?" ( grrr.. show off again...hehe)

Yah, wise thinkin on deciding on one blog.. rather than 2. Writing captions will certainly make the photo experience even more interesting. Not to mention ur givin us (drum roll) "the commentors" less work....:)

[divster] thanks..
hmm...a tip to handle that..remember some important names...so if the the person says 'have you been to blah'..respond..no..'but have You been to blah'..the name should be long complicated and difficult to understand..
heh..oh that same old towerish thing in paris..lets see..think about it..is it montmarte..no no..thats a hill..it must be that tower built by that guy..eiffel..eiffel tower...
yeah..thats the basic idea...what if i run out of things to say..what if i get bored..all that doesnt come in with one blog..

Anonymous said...

Hehe. Thanks for the tip.
By the way.. there actually exists a place called "montmarte" (rolls her eyes)Sheesh.. seems like i spent half of my stay on the streets of champs elysees drainin my financial resources.

Yes, a creative person at heart..wudnt deal with digicams. Cud someone give tips on how to use a good video camera? I got one. but its sittin in da dumps.. bcause ma usage is just too.. well.. letsnot comment.;)

Thanks again. Hope u have a nice day. Feels nice to see an IIT student comin up with such gud stuff. :)

[divster] bah..that is so unfair..does that imply iit students usually dont come up with good stuff..he he..no fair no fair...:D..SP did you hear that..
If you prick us, do we not bleed?
if you tickle us, do we not laugh?
if you poison us, do we not die?
and if you wrong us, shall we not
revenge?

yes..it's actually the hill with the cathedral..it is the northern end of paris..have you heard of the moulin rouge..well..it's over there..
there i just went again :D..i didn't even realize it..
video cams are different..it's different from using a camera..you probably need to script it nicely..but more than than that you should hold it steady :D.. he he..

Prashanth said...

Yeah, Shylock Ramani, I heard that ;)

Kirthi said...

Hmm. I prefer the digi one coz you don't have to go 'shucks I don't have enough rolls.' You can go clicketty click without looking through the aperture. Then you can go snippety snip if some dumb dolt put his head in between. Capture the moment before it's gone with the wind.
Grr word verification...et tu ramani?

Artful Badger said...

[prashanth] he he..hmm....you know SP..the image that people have of us..:D
-i have had people telling me, IIT guys, oh for a CS guy you are 'not that bad'.. => ....
- outside IIT i have people telling me, hmm.. , you don't have so much attitude for an IIT guy => ..
Highly unfair no.
[divster] just kidding i think you got that. don't take it to heart, take it to lungs, take a deep breath and let it out :D.
[kirthi] thats exactly my point...the fun IS in looking through the apperture..the fun is in doing all that stuff for a photo..if you get a nice photo..you know it's your own effort and not the camera....
well..in some ways a digicam is better..thinking of getting one actually..is good for on a day to day bassis..
yeah..what to do..otherwise i get a lot of comment spam..

Anonymous said...

Hahahaha... So much for da mention of IIT. i jus... havent met so many guys frm India..but hav heard rumours abt IIT guys being made of 'higher stuff'.. soo told maself.. that here is an example...(blushes)

As far as Prashy..Prashu..Prash..is concerned..Still owes me the 'basic courtesy towards women'... so i wait now.. to throw ma next deadly comment..(iit guys?cute?)

[divster] higher stuff..do you mean i am drunk..or have some ethyl alchohol permanently in my system...
sp is too specific about what compliments he can recieve..i am not..
..i can live with being cute..hot is also ok...its better :D..

Prashanth said...

So, as a basic courtesy to women, I am supposed to insult Divster. Some courtesy. I am a chivalrous man. I refuse to insult women needlessly :P

Divster said...

Hi ramani, how 'bout,
"You're my type of a guy!!! "...
as a compliment???

damn, I can visualize Ramani totally perplexed, wondering if its a compliment at all ??? Meanwhile I'm having my evil laugh, confounding you!!

But really, if there is one "interest" that I've spent max time, effort n tons of money its photography!!! I'll love sharing my pic-perfect stupidities when I got more time over the weekend....

Till then... Take Care ..

Artful Badger said...

[prashanth] dude as i said....we know you can't handle the love four letter and 3 letter words hurtling in your direction..so divster ignore that fellow...you know where to go ;)
[vc] he is doing it on purpose..i am sure Sp is loving every single minute of it :D...he he he he
[prashanth, divster] idhan kadhal enbadha? he he..just kidding..dont take it seriously..
[divster] yeah divster..i really dont mind it..like i said..i am a lot more easy going on what compliments i take without getting offended..
[intern] thanks :D..you do?..seriously why don't you put them up...put up a blog no..cmon..or do you already have one?
[rohini] welcome! from KP's blog I suppose :D. hmm...well..i am not sure..it's a shot where the line of vision aligns with what you want to get across...don't know..you could it call it a 'low angle shot'..where the shot is taken from a level lower than the subject...the main thing with this is the sun and the building does all the work..you just need to click :D...

Artful Badger said...

[intern] it's the weekend. i am waiting. again, why don't you start a blog ????

aww ramani,
didnt write nething this weekened, but here I am ...

Now its for you to decide if I'm more crazy about Formula-1 or photography, cause just two day befor F1 in Indianapolis; I brought a brand new digital SLR [Canon EOS 350D / Digital Rebel XT ]...

The only reason for a new digicam being, that my Nikon digicam (Nikon 8700 coolpix) which is also an excellent camera with 8.0 megapixel and 8x optical zoom; has one major problem: SPEED!!!
Two speed-issues had to be tackled:
- SHUTTER LAG - the *pause* between shutter release button pressed and picture taken was huge..
- CLICK-to-CLICK Lag - another major glitch was the huge time-lag between ability to take consequetive pictures ..

These may not pose any major problems when clicking portraits or party-pix but O boy when clicking A-C-T-I-O-N .. they become ingredients for disaster!!!
Something like I'm clicking Schumacher but probably would get Karthikeyan's ... who was about one whole lap behind!!! Well Nikon delivered EXCELLENT results... (though F1 itself was a disaster).. It gives *continuous* pictures ........ which may go more than 50 in tandem !!!
NOW THATS SUPER COOL

Its 8 megapixel so excellent photo-quality is guranteed PLUS has both : AUTO-FOCUS and MANUAL options ...
"AUTO Mode" takes care of action, portrait, landscape, beach, snow, night-view.....Then when feeling adventurous shift to MANUAL mode, *adjust* shutter-speed, aperture .. have multiple lenses , filters ....

Now even this has a handicap: SIZE : it needs a seperate case...
But I love stashing my camera in purse....so I got a small digicam for my purse; which almost always travels with me!!

I got plenty of stories about my CRAZY picture-clicking ... streets of Chicago are good haunt!!! Love clicking those road-side musicians/ rivers/ lakes .... PEOPLE ...

Gosh... another lengthy post
-Intern

Damn, that was long; and I'm back with more ...
but earlier I'd written on camera, this time on my choicest "subjects"

Chicago can be any photographers delight.. offering the most modern architecture along with quaint bars n resturants; where latest most upscale luxury cars share roads with vintage models; where high-brow richie-rich of society coexists with ragged getto dwellers; where avant-garde in fashion can be contrasted with the most ethnic types ...
.. and I love CAPTURING THIS DIVERSITY !!!

So apart clicking Sears, Hancock n scores of buildings.... I love to photograph people... in their everyday chores; rushing to office. travelling by trains, buses, boats ... and most fun I have is clicking in the "Millenium Park" ... of people reading novels; basking under the sun, strolling carelessly; or traffic policemen helping hapless lost souls ...
... and believe me its tricky taking snaps of people.. thats part of the fun!!! The most I've enjoyed clicking the roadside musicians, just put $1 or 2 ... and click click clik ...
..
I end up taking hundreds of photograps and sometimes I'm not there in a single frame... Sometimes I catch a tourist and ask them to take mine...
One of my most pleasnt moments..
when one such tourist gently said..
"you got a lovely smile" !!!

btw Ramani....how was your Chicago trip???

Intern high time u start yr own blog

- Mr. XYZ (dont wanna reveal my identity as yet)

Ramani, I'm sooo upset;
NO afterthought on my long comment *SIGH* ...

JUST KIDDING!!!

I'm in a very happy mood...
so gonna sing a song , but doncha worry, its not off-topic,
but appropiately enough germane to the topic:

PICTURE BOOK : Kinks
Picture yourself when you’re getting old,
Sat by the fireside a-pondering on[? ].
...
Picture book, a holiday in august, outside a bed and breakfast in sunny southend.
Picture book, when you were just a baby, those days when you were happy, a long time ago..
Na, na, na, na, na na
Na, na, na, na, na na
Picture book ... Picture book
A-scooby-dooby-doo.....

SO .....
Two thumps way up for your PICTURE COLLECTION..
" The happiness of life is made up of minute fractions, the little soon forgotten charities of a kiss, a smile, a kind look or heart felt compliment "
.. n P-I-C-T-U-R-E-S!!! LOL

[anonymous] chicago trip went well...had a lot of fun..the company put me up at the 4 seasons...i also had a friend working in the same company..so we hung out the next day...
i noticed that after getting a job people are a lot more easy with their money :D....
three posts super long...wow...
Well Nikon delivered EXCELLENT results... (though F1 itself was a disaster).. It gives *continuous* pictures ........ which may go more than 50 in tandem !!!
Hmm..I have been thinking of gettting a digital SLR...sometime..onece I have the money..I like the part about 50 in tandem..you can probably take those in motion shots..where the background is a blur...atleast 1-2 of the 50 should come out nicely...

Hmm..cities are nice...why don't you share some of your nicer photos with us...

your camera looks so good...see i dont mind a digitial camera like that..but i should be able to afford the 600 odd dollars :D...

yes people shots are really nice...unfortunately i haven't taken to many people shots...

" The happiness of life is made up of minute fractions, the little soon forgotten charities of a kiss, a smile, a kind look or heart felt compliment "

Yo Ramani,
Seems you got a fan!!!

Though corresponding with you, is not at all a bad idea, but till date I havent send you any mail. Guess what, this mailer must be fretting-n-fuming that you didnt recognize her (hopefully not him) !!!
You got to figure out who s/he might be!!!

Well I dont need to clarify, but I think there's no harm in mentioning that, so far I've corresponded with only 2 people from this blogosphere: Prashanth and HOH. Both are good friends; good fun and I hold them in high esteem.

So keep your search on ...

Maybe I'll mail you, so you know my style and we'll get to know each-other better.

BUuuuuuut
WOW.. now I can tease you !!!
