OTG is back! Yet again! And etc.

Today in class OTG happened to sit to my left, and Timor to my right. We had an especially boring lecture, and thus were reduced to having to talk to each other. The following conversation was duly recorded.
OTG: So what do you do?
Me: I am in Computer Science.
OTG: Ok, the computer stuff. Ah so you write that..whats that called..
Me: *Wow! With new found respect....* Code. We design the different programs that you use.
OTG: So, can I call you the next time something goes wrong with my computer?
Me: *Ahem* Not, really. I might know what to do, but we aren't really taught that stuff. You will probably need to go to Best Buy.
OTG: Can you help me recover data from my crashed hard disk?
Me: *Ahem ahem* Not really. *Very cleverly.."* Its like asking the guy who designed your car to check your brakes.
OTG: Something.
Things might not have been great, but they weren't bad either. Then, attention shifted to Timor. The magic stroke came. (The word stroke here refers to wishing you would drop down dead.)
OTG : So, where are you from ?
Timor : Belarus
OTG : Which country is that in ?
I was tempted to say - 'Asia', but I just shut up.

Randomly associating, this reminds me of another time, when I had to speak about my country in, yes, French. I had just joined the exchange program, and there was a 2 week intensive French course to bring us all up to speed. So, towards the end of the course, when our vocabulary had kind of built up, we had to draw a map of our country and describe it. My friend Amit and I went on and on. Hindus, Christians, Muslims, Sikhs. Ganga, Yamuna, Sutlej, Cauvery. Himalayas, Eastern Ghats, Aravallis, Vindhyas. Hindi, Tamil, Malayalam, Bengali. We had succeeded in putting everyone to sleep. Except for this very unhibited Brasilian couple that decided that they really couldn't wait till they got of class (the US is kind of stuck up that way). As someone or the other might have famously said, one never knows when inspiration strikes. There was a flash right there. What is India without the Kama Sutra! 'Poof', the entire class revived from the dead. Like water soaking up a dry sponge. Like oil sliding over, encompassing and lubricating a rusty metal joint. Questions were asked. References were requested. Dates and locations were demanded. Looking at this enthusiastic response, from a sense of public duty, we felt it responsible upon ourselves to offer some live demos, but *sigh* there were no takers :(.

Continuing this random association business, do you remember as a child when your mother used to buy you clothes that were a couple of sizes too big. You had to fold them up around your ankles so that the cloth didn't scrape against the floor. They used to look awkward, and like you couldn't afford decent clothes. You couldn't wait till you got taller and the clothes fit you properly. Do you also remember as a child when your uncle from the USA didn't get you that Columbia backpack that you always wanted? So, most embarrasingly, you were reduced to carting around your books stuffed in your paati's shopping bag. Well people, you need to be embarrased no more. Its all good. Its all high fashion. I don't know what the first trend is called. The second thing is the Man bag. Much of my inadvertant interest in this topic was spurred by this guy I hung out in Chicago with. I shall call him Jean the Jean Man. (The first Jean should be prononced in French, and the second in English. All for a purpose.) From a distance of 25 metres he could identify the brand name, styling and cost of any pair of jeans. Based on this data, further identification of individuals was made as 'cheapo', 'just pass' and 'high maintanence'.

On a more serious note. How many of you know about the Kaavya Viswanathan scandal?
  • She is a 19 year old sophomore at Harvard who published her own book at 18.
  • Now, she is in hot water because a number of paragraphs in her book have been found to be suspiciouly similar to the writing of Megan McCafferty, an ex editor of Cosmopolitan.
I feel pretty bad for her. Firstly, at 19, she is hardly old enough to handle the kind of publicity that she has been getting. Putting it in a manner that many of my co-bloggers can identify with, she is being 'trolled' by the entire nation. For the next how many ever years she has to live with being 'that' person. Secondly, if she is smart enough to get into Harvard, she is definitely smart enough to realize that copying material will get her into trouble. More generiously, I am sure she is talented enough to not have to rip off other people. I can imagine how it might have happened though. If I were a 19 year old guitarist, I would try to imitate the chords of say Eric Clapton or Steve Vai or whoever. I wouldn't think twice before incorporating them into a song of my own. How could I even imagine that its going to be playing on the radio, and Clapton is going to hear it and sue me? Also, the insane competitiveness of her existence probably pushes her to do such things. Thirdly, she is of Indian origin and Tam Brahm :). I support all people of Indian origin who are doing well for themselves. Further, I doubly support Tam Brahms of Indian origin who are doing well for themselves :).

On a happier note, Pramod Mahajan was shot by his own brother. As they say, weeding out corruption starts at home, and what could be a better way to go about it. If only all the kith and kin of politicians would take the inititative and pump some lead between their misguided relative's heads. Misa Bharati do you hear me? Sudhakaran can you hear me? All you people out there who have politicians for relatives, you know what to do.

Er... Ok, I know Belarus is in Europe and all, but I don't think it was that obvious :)

You had a Kama Sutra conversation in French? (raises an eyebrow) I didn't know they taught the words required for that at Alliance Francais ;)

I heard about the Kaavya Vishwanath thing, poor kid. But Pramod Mahajan? I thought he was a competent politician, someone worth having around. Of course, my knowledge of Indian politics - any politics for that matter - is rather holey, so I could be wrong.

[born a libran] :)..
[prashanth] oh well..it wasn't that obvious..but he had such an outrageous eastern european accent..i mean its such a silly question to ask...
well...not really..just the mention of the work woke them up..i really couldn't elaborate due to language constraints..
oh well..he could be..he sounds like one of the more decent guys..i was just trying to express a more general sentiment..
[intern] why?..out of my tam brahm community? huh?...well firstly my life isn't half as interesting..these are just stray incidents that i lets say 'emphasize'..and make them sound interesting...
yeah..I know about the James Frey thing..he had to apologize on Oprah Winfrey..she was one pissed off lady..
I have seen Hotel Rwanda though I don't know who you mean...I have seen a bit of Ronin as well...
Well yes I want to see Da Vinci Code...though I found the whole thing to be quite pop culture type..

Jean Reno is the guy who plays the french intelligence person in the recent Godzilla movie, the one with Mathew Broderick as the hero. Can't recall offhand other movies he's starred in.

Well, well, all's random that ends random :)...
~ this KV affair has def. been hotstuff, I'm going to go off on my soapbox now...apparently she had a company called 'Alloy' which 'packaged' her book for her (didnt even know those types of services existed)...so it seems like she wrote some stuff, her parents decided to bring in this company, that informed her she could write beautifully, and gave her a $500K deal to boot...all nice, no...
~ Now, I havent read either her book or the other one, Sloppy Firsts, but plagiarism is something thats literally drilled into US students heads...So I am very suspect that she didnt realize she was lifting whole passages out of the other book, I mean, c'mon...
~ But at the same time, I do feel badly for her, simply because it seems like all these adults (her Tam Brahm parents included) wanted for her to do big and really pushed her to write whatever it is she was writing, copied, internalized or what not...like you said, pressure!
~ Her apologies seem sincere and 'unpackaged' enough, and after all shes 19...I do feel bad regards the repurcussions she may be in for at Harvard though...

~ can't believe you discussed the KS in a language you just learnt!...*shakes head*...good publicity stunt, though, for sure ;)

[prashanth] oh well i haven't seen Godzilla..so :)...
[intern] yes I remember that name..
I saw Polanski's Oliver Twist...good but a little disappointing comapred to his other work..
well..yes..when money is in hand..plan to get a camera etc..but i need to find the time..the first few months are going to be pretty tight...
even now I feel I am getting old and grown up :(...working in a job and all that..
[pavan] oh no please!!...lets not get into seuch things :)...of course in that case we would have a lot more entertainment..
that indian bloggers website is weird..
hmm..how??....you designed the filters?? (not in an insulting way, just asking)
[alraqs] oh yes...its the boy band version of chicklit...of the 500k half goes to alloy..so she doesn't get as much as it looks..except for a super resume..
yeah thats one thing...when you keep pushing the limit..if you aren't careful you are going to get into trouble...
not at Harvard but in life..apparently...she wants to be an Investment Banker when she graduates..
In that industry....even the slightest bit of cheating can get you in very very hot water...as an industry it has a lot of fraud and people are very wary..
No one will want to hire her!!..
oh well..didn't really discuss it...said something like..
" India very famous for KS. Ancient manual for blah."
That did the trick...
[intern] my hindi sucks..though I did study it for 10 years...
I really don't know anything about it to describe it...a mere mention of the word is sufficient for audience response...
[vc] well not really :)...
yes..that was good..we need to have more incidents like that..

Fashion First. Those are called, very simply, rolled-up jeans :) And they look really cool!
And also, you're the first blogger i've encountered who took that stand on Kaavya V. I agree with you. Internalizing does happen. I mean, when I was in college and writing all those long papers and essays on films, books etc. I did end up sounding like an awful mix of all the books i'd read on the subject. And so did most other students.
But I do feel bad for Kaavya...
And in other news, Pramod Mahajan just passed away a couple hours ago...

Me too been following the KV thing... and from personal experience, I can say that while writing a book, one does tend to mimic, unconsciously, other authors one may have read. And all the examples they've picked out are so common yet random that a dozen authors in the world could have written similar stuff without knowing it.

On the upside, from the amount of publicity this thing has generated, I don't think KV's literary career is anywhere near finished.

Why exactly is pramod mahajan corrupt?

Artful Badger said...

[sarath] hmm :)..heh..i wont be surprised....people here can be so cut off..
[vijayeta] thank you :)...oh yes the capri type look...
yeah..i mean when you are 17..you will feel super proud if you can half imitate your heroes..you aren't at the stage where you have settled into your own style..
oops...I hope I haven't become a bad person...I was just reflecting a general sentiment..
[prashanth] yeah exactly...when i see myself write..i somehow mimic people i like to read about..in organization..structure..topics...
[govind] Guam is a country. Comoros are a set of Islands. I have seen their stamps so might be a country. Might also belong to France or Britain :)..
Well..he may not be..I was just trying to show my general feelings towards politics -
* sick of it, and all of them can go to hell*..:)

alraqs said...

hmmm, well politicians are generally crap, and we must diss them so...but at the end of the day, here is this guy with a wife and two kids, living in his regular two-bedroom mumbai deal...and his brother (his own kith and kin and all that) shoots him!...that is wrong, you dont have brothers to get shot by them, politician or not...come on now people, a little feeling for him is not misplaced...I wonder, whatever happened to family ties?...anger and rage it seems are overtaking the world, quicker and quicker by the every minute...oh, and understandably, apathy too, it seems ;)

alraqs said...

prashanth--
yeah, like you said, the key word is mimic...mimic, okay; copy, not okay...
I thought some passages were extrapolated too, but not all, and plus, she did apologize, so I guess she must have known it...at the end of the day--whatever...

RT said...

You actually spoke about Kamasutra in French? Wow..! :-)
And about the KV issue, its quite unfortunate for her. But what the heck! Any publicity is good publicity. And she has a great future ahead for sure. :-)

lol..nice read!!
Ya..been following the Kavvya thing.. it's kind of sad.. I think she was just too naive..(to put it diplomatically! More so coz she'a an ABCD..she better know these things are a big no no!)

Btw.. ur OTG friend takes the cake!! I found a few more of his breed here:

Hmmm...For a few seonds there, I thought you had demonstrated the KS with your friend, Amit :-)...oh well...

As for KV, plagiarism is a big thing in this country and considering how her phrases are almost identical to the original author's, it's sorta hard to feel bad for her.

Artful Badger said...

[alraqs] Yeah I really did realize that. I wasn't pitching for him to die. Their actions in life eventually catches up with them. What they have done to others, just might come back to them. Not for this specific case, but as a general phenomenon :)..
Yeah people try to mimic. But, I am sure she thought no one would find out. If I include a version of a para from a vague classic, how would anyone know?
[rt] well not really..i just mentioned the word..and that did it..
my french sucks..i can pretend to read and understand..but i cannot alkt...
[aditya] yeah definitely. considering that there have been some huge fabrication scandals in recent time (frey, the wash post or NYT writer...), most older writers would have realized what they are gettin ginto..she is getting lynched by the media..
[anon] oh no...i was offering free training to the audience :)..
yeah thats true..what she did was wrong!..but she is 17..and really someone should have realized this earlier...it needn't have become such a big scandal..

So yeah, relatives of politicians....heed Ramani's request please!

:D

Primalsoup said...

You know I do feel a lot more sorry for Mahajan than Viswanathan.

Nobody deserves to die like that. None of us are supposed to play god.

And as for Kaavya, I think even more pathetic than her copying was her attempt to justify the same. Harvard should throw her out just for coming up with that idiotic excuse!

Artful Badger said...

[wannabe punkster] :)..you know i feel like such a bad person..I really didn't want him to die you know!..there is no coming back from that...
[primalsoup] I know. Getting killed by your own brother is shocking. I also felt he was one of the better politicians out there. Young proactive etc.
I was just seeing that, very often, the way you live your life eventually comes back to you.

Oh well. Everyone copies. Not verbatim, but in the end you are going to sound somewhat similar to what you have read. You can get away with it for a class assignment, but not in real life.

The Karmic principle. If you do shit, one day it will hit the fan!

twip said...

I know Ramani. Obviously death itself is hard, let alone being killed like that.

Anonymous said...

Yeah, it sucks for Kaavya, and her publishers should have tried to catch it before and now they are trying to avoid getting any flack for it by withdrawing the book. Kaavya, for her part, should not have used lame excuses...oh well, at least she will probably be extremely careful about citing other people in the future.

Artful Badger said...

[indian punkster]Yeah he looked like one of the younger better types.
[anon] Exactly. Once you get all high profile, you need to be careful what you do!

twip said...

psssst, Ramani........on a side note...call me Megha.
