Chennai Open , Madras (not Chennai nooo!)

The last week was a lot of fun. Bought season tickets to the Gold Flake Tata Chennai Open and went there every single day. I haven't missed a single one of it's episodes since it started sometime in '98. Boris Becker. Yevgeny Kafelnikov. Paes/Bhupathy. Richard Krajicek. Magnus Norman. Micheal Tillstrom. Paradorn Srichapan. Carlos Moya.
Actually, not many people know that there used to be a Challenger Tournament held at the same venue before it became an Open. My grandfather's house is a couple of streets away, and I usually spent my vacations with him. Nobody pays to watch a 400th ranked and 700th ranked player battle it out in the baking sun. So, I used to amble down to the courts after lunch, look at all these tall strong people hit the ball very hard and walk back in the evening. I once remember even sitting behind Leander Paes, see he wasn't very famous then. Actually, he was (he was playing the Davis Cup for India, he beat that South Afrikan guy, famous, does anyone remember him?) but not that famous. Anyway, the Challenger then became on Open.
In it's first edition, a wild card pair in the doubles, Paes and Bhupathy won the doubles, which was their first tournament win of any kind. At that time, Bhupathy was totally unknown. That win gave them seedings in the bigger tournaments and got them winning the Grand Slams and the really high profile prestigious tournaments. Anyway, this year, Rohan Bopanna and Prakash Amritraj, made it to the finals, but lost. I guess it has given them enough points to be given an entry into the Australian Open later this month. Hope they do well! That was also the year of Boris Becker. He had been close to retirement then, and I am guessing he was sent there just to kickstart things by creating a buzz. I still remember his trademark serving style and game. He lost pretty early on, but it was well worth it. He used to be called 'Boom Boom' Becker for good reason. Many generations of amateur tennis players have attempted to imitate his action. ( Other actions that I just cannot forget - Pete Sampras, Goran Ivanesevic. Thats it I think! And yes, John McKenroe. How could I!!)
Anyway, during those first years I was still in school. PSBB. (Begin Digression) I had shifted there for a more 'competitive' atmosphere and to help me to get into IIT. Those days were crazy. In addition to school, I used to have close to 15 hours a week of coaching classes, and on top of that I had to find time to study for both. I also was psychotic enough to apply to the US for undergraduate studies. So much work and tension. I seriously wonder how I did it. I didn't do anything for 2 years, except study of course. No tennis. No time for friends. No movies. No nothing. My ex-classmates in Sishya used to have a blast. Was very irritating to hear their stories! No, I don't want to go through it again. But, I guess those 2 years made me, for better or for worst is open for contest! (End Digression) The school is a street away from the Nungambakkam Stadium, and hence 3 streets away from my grandfathers house. Most of my coaching classes were held in the Nungambakkam area, so I used to practically live with my grandfather. The Open used to be a welcome break during my winter vacation.
And then I got into college, and the first half of December used to go in preparation for the inter-IIT sports meet. For those who don't know I used to play tennis for IIT Madras. (Don't think its some major thing. It quite amateurish. If you can hold a racquet and kind of make contact with the ball, you are through!) The second half of December used to be at the sports meet held in rotation at each of the six (?) IITs. The entire IIT contigent used to board the train and go across to the other IIT. My main crib about playing tennis is that we had to play for almost the entire day, and had little time to watch the other teams play. The TT guys used to play for about 45 minutes and faff around for the rest of the day. Anyway, thanks to the small size (4) and the duration of time spent together we ended up becoming pretty close friends. We usually planned something fun post meet. You also met all kinds of people. And IIT people do IIT things so you end up bumping into them here and there and everywhere. It is actually quite surprising. My tennis partner in UIUC was my opponent from IIT Bombay! Anyway, I used to come back just in time for the New Year, and the Open. On one of the finals, when the winner hit the ball into the air, I caught it, almost. It slipped out of my hand and my friend took it. Drat!
Now I am in the US. I always end up spending my winter in India and since the Open is always in the first week of January, I make it a point to go. Of late I have become addicted to the serve gun. I always have a go at it, but I never used to be able to get a good speed on it. Well, things have changed. I managed to hit one at 159 Kmph. I think in reality I my serve is 20 Kmph faster, with a better racket and a better gun. One of the pros had been asked to serve there for publicity purposes, and he clocked 162 Kmph, which I just don't believe. That guy had just beaten the previous year's finalist. I am sure the poor things that get hit by his racket rocket by at 180+ Kmph. My brother did 171 Kmph btw. It's might actually be more. He is this big really strong tall guy and the thing usually reaches me at about shoulder height, and, you just have enough time to blink. So, when I play with him, I quite naturally fear for my physical safety.
Another thing is that I keep bumping into people at the Open. Old coaches, school mates, acquaintances from here and there. The crowd is also quite 'happening' crowd, if you know what I mean. And, a fair number of celebrities. So, if you don't wan't to see the tennis, there are always other things to see!
All said, hope I make it next winter! I know there are some readers out there who are going to say, "Ha! You will probably make it next spring, summer, fall and winter."

Wow! You really made me feel nostalgic. I used to watch every Davis Cup doubles match because they were so fast paced and fun, unlike the singles matches which can get quite boring - in the Davis Cup that is.

11th standard in PSBB was quite fun for me, I used to go to every inter-school cultural program, while you slogged it out to get one rank higher than me :P. But yes, 12th was very hectic. Looking back, I wonder how I survived with 18 hrs of JEE coaching a week plus regular school plus assignments and exams for both.

The tennis stadium does have a significance for me, but very different from yours: it was where the Nungambakkam bridge club had its games on tuesday evenings, and JP, me, etc would attend faithfully every week.

I am almost inclined to believe that to be on the IIT Madras tennis team you only need know how to hold a racket and hit the ball, because I know well the horrific standards we have in skating and bridge, so I guess it may as well extend to tennis! I did hear you're a terrific tennis player, however, though I've never seen you play.

Ok, let me stop before this comment starts looking like a blog post of my own :)

Chanced by....Lucky you got to watch the Open--is Ljubicic really as good as people say he is??...Also, I suggest PIGS (haha) should try Air Lanka--cheap flites abound...They even sell PGW at the Colombo airport :)

[prashanth]hmm...i used to watch them a lot too..India used to do surpisingly well in them...beat South Africa and some other fancier teams..I don't know who plays for the team now..totally out of touch...
Hmm...so what was your rank?..99 ;)...Yeah, I kind of missed it..Coming from Sishya (a relatively chilled out school) I was pretty anxious about how I would cope in PSBB...that also contributed to why I probably worked so hard...
Yeah seriously...on most days I used to have some class or the other from 8 in the morning to 9 in the night..and I had to study and finish the worksheets after that...scary...
hmm...where do they hold it...I guess there are a number of spare rooms there..don't tell me you play bridge on the tennis court..
Almost...unlike Cricket or Football or Hockey, tennis is not a mass game...its takes a relatively long time to learn and there is barely anybody who has played it before IIT...so usually there are about 4-5 people in TOTAL who can play somewhat and are likely to come..and we select 3-4 from that...even then only 1-2 are 'match' quality..
I play ok..the thing is I have been playing for a looong time..I can't beat any of the state type players..but I can pull some games from them...
anyway..how did your winter go..
[alraqs] welcome!d...Ljubicic is pretty good...he doesn't have a very flashy game but has a huge serve and plays very accurately...
Heh..no..I am nationalisitic..I will only fly Air India..actually I flew American Airlines last time around..as for Air Lanka my parents are very afraid that I might get blown up..
PGW?....PG Wodehouse! Ha! Pigs have wings!

Artful Badger said...

Very impressed you got that!! PGW.

We usually played in one of the rooms in the first floor, though a couple of times we played in the seating gallery when the usual room was not available! That was fun :) no tennis on but we had a great view of the court.

Winter... I practically hibernated. Now back to class :(

:) I'm sure any loyal Emsworth-clan fan wud have picked it up...nevertheless, *bow* taken...
Well, the big serve must be a Croat thing, right from the Goran days...

alraqs said...

wait--just read the post a little more closely--you went to PSBB?!?! Main School?!?...me too!!!...wow, for this internet thing...

Prashanth said...

Huh? Hold it alraqs, tell us your name and batch... or at least email it. Both Ramani and I are from PSBB Main.

Artful Badger said...

[prashanth] hmm...actually in addition to the Open our tennis team used to practice there because it rains every december in Madras...and I usually play there nowadays because I feel a little uncomforable playing in IIT..
Hmm..I finally defroze..now back to the drab boredom of class and grad life..
[intern]*a little embarrassed* thanks..of late into nostalgia trips so this is in the scheme of that...
yeah...i have been playing tennis for a long time..i don't follow it now but I love to play..
yes..it's John McEnroe...when I was typing it out I knew it was wrong but was too lazy to check for the correct spelling :D..
Hmm..don't know...he used to be fun..I was too young when he played..but I have seen some of his videos..he sure knew how to lose his temper...that affected his game though..tended to collapse after that..
[alraqs] actually Ljubecic action resembles Goran..atleast in the way he draws his racket back...he isn't as prolific as Goran with the aces though..
[alraqs] PSBB Main?? Wow..yes as SP said both of us are from PSBB Main...We graduated in 2000...

Happy new year to u too! Grr the whole world except I, has word verification. Get rid of it for god's sake. Its a waste of time!!

Artful Badger said...

Thanks!...word verification..
But I get a lot of spam...Every time I make a post I get 5-6 spam messages..
Most painful...
The other option is comment moderation..it's worse because no comment comes on till I verify it..

No kidding, 2000??...well i finished my 12th in 2000, this is weird!...but I was there only for 2 yrs, so I never really knew too many ppl...and although I'm pretty bad with names, I dont remember you two in my class, I was in 12A...(the only prashant I knew was DP)...12B then??...I am much better at faces, and would prolly recognize if I saw you on the street--I actually bumped into siddharth (whom again, i just recognized by his face, maybe you know him?) a yr or so ago...wow, what a way to run into ppl, PSBB was such a long time ago for me!...well, hello!! :)

Prashanth said...

Oh hi Roshni, I do remember you. I am the "other" Prashanth :) better known as SP. And yep, we were both in 12B.

If you're in Purdue now you probably know a lot of our IITian friends there.

Artful Badger said...

[alraqs] hmm...actually it's the same here..I joined in 1998 and left in 2000...12B...i barely know anyone as well...I just knew the people form my class..
siddharth : is it T Siddharth or Siddharth Kasinath or R K Siddharth...
i dont remember you..but as you said..if i saw you on the road i would probably notice :D...
[prashanth] impressive!!

Holy Christ !! even i'm from PSBB Main.. I'm from 12C

What is this a reunion party? can i come too? Please please .. i like the punch they serve at these reunions.. and and..

who am i kidding.. and could you guys, for once, drop this sentence :" I would probably recognize you if I saw you on the street ".. its so funny :)

Sorry i'm just mad that Julie from my school days doesn't drop by my blog and go "Vc you are from Cluny Convent !! OMG . me too. me too :)

Great post Ramani :) and glad you guys could find an old classmate .. :) Nothing is impossible on the internet...

Prashanth said...

Huh? Whats impressive about remembering a name? Besides, I never forget people who scored better than me in English, even if it was more Mrs.Valli's fault than mine that I got poor marks ;)

This is quite irrelevant, but while we're on the subject of old schoolmates, I thought I'll mention it... I ran into DP Sharanya a few months ago in Chennai... did you know she joined NDTV as a journalist? I even heard her reporting on a story on TV once. Apparently she did her bachelor's in journalism from some univ in england after she finished school.

Damn, was that gossip? I've sunk to a new low...

Vc said...

Wait till Kk reads this .. auhahahaa.. SP gossiping .. uahhahahahaha ...

Artful Badger said...

[vc] Thanks! I was very surprised. I wonder how she managed to come across this blog.
I would probably recognize you if I saw you on the street
'I would probably recognize you' does the trick I suppose.
[alraqs] how did you find this blog? i would have thought you would have come through SP's first!..
anyway..an introduction might not be out of the way?..
[prashanth] how the hell do you know she is from purdue!!..thats what amazed me...
Valli thought I should contribute an article to the school magazine so don't you dare say a bad things about her..
She gave me most horrible marks in English..mostly becaues I have a terrible handwriting...
I was there only for 2 years and studying overmuch..so I barely know anyone..
Who is Sharanya? I have no idea who she is. Which class is she in? I think that was intended for Roshni I think.
Why are all fun things categorized as bad? I was reading an article in the Hindu which said was gossiping was good and relived stress. So, lets not feel so bad.
[vc] in this case. yes. SP how dare you gossip :D..

Prashanth said...

I have an extra piece of info you don't have: good ol' long nosed Siddarth Kashinath is in Purdue. Put that together with the facts that Roshni's profile says she is in Indiana and her blog says she's a grad student, and it doesn't need a Sherlock Holmes to figure out that she's probably in Purdue.

Sharanya is DP Prashant's cousin, she was in 12C. That info was meant for you as much as for Roshni... I'd forgotten that you hardly spoke to regular mortals while we were in school :P

...and lets not talk about Valli!

alraqs said...

~ yes, I do remember sharanya, lets say I would recognize her if I saw her on the TV (and the street for that matter) :D...
~ good thing prashanth knows his siddharth's because I would not have been able to provide you with his initials...but yes, his nose is, er, uncommon...
~ yeah, I do go to purdue, the explanation sounds pretty logical, but at first, I too was surprised prashanth knew...
~ I do sustainable livelihoods and community forestry type stuff, so I dont really know any IIT folks...
~ how did I get here?--I was in one of my 'I miss home' moods and felt the need to read abt madras, so I typed it into the blog search thingy...I think ramani's was second or third on the list, and since it talked about tennis, it was obviously the one I decided to go to...and so I'm here--quite simple, actually :)
~ phew, that was long!

Artful Badger said...

his nose is, er, uncommon
Heh..
Hmm..much flattered that people visit my blog through search engines :D...anyway welcome!...

Prashanth said...

Hey Ramani, did you check out the blog put up by that guy asking about Ranga? Hilarious. Check it out.

Prashanth said...

Oh yes, thats Ramani humour :)

Hey, no additional comments for my blog? Damn.

Artful Badger said...

[prashanth] oh yes. i did check it out. it was so long back. i am suprised he would still remember. i am sure we know him reasonably well. i think i know who it might be.
[intern] thanks!! yes my own brand of stupid inane humor.
[prashanth] he he..there there..39 comments is good..don't be sad :D..

The south African guy was called Black (i can't remember his first name)

Nag

Artful Badger said...

No not Byron Black. There is another guy whose name starts with F. Paes beat him with much fanfare in the Davis Cup.

so, finally got to watch ljubicic yesterday make small work of nalbandian...he is most elegant, esp. his backhand!, and the serve too...he's even gone on and proclaimed himself the second best player in the world currently...wonder how he will match up to fed-god on sunday though...

Artful Badger said...

hmm..quite surprised by that..he is good but not really on eof those young energetic players..
surprised he made it to two..
but he is powerful..
saw him beat the hell out of moya..
