How time flies..

I was just caught up in a moment of nostalgia.
How time has flown- 4 joyful years in IIT went by in a flash.
I can't believe I have been in the US for almost a year now. Seems like I arrived yesterday!
Another interesting comment I came across (by a friend in my CS class newsgroups, not too tough to guess actually):

Well, life is very different working for a Pharmaceutical Company. For, starters I wear formal clothing. And, most of the people know little to no computer science. Which is good for me as I can learn a lot of Biology. My boss looks ok, would like to get my project done fast and move on to some research. Which is just fine with me! He doesn't seem to be a typical industry guy, he is more of an academic. He is Biology+CS major with a Ph. D. from UCLA with one year of post-doc experience. He worked for a while with a biotech startup before moving into a more stable job with Glaxo. He seems to know a lot about the industry and trends as such. He was telling me all about the drug development process, for the first time I feel like I am getting a real hands on perspective of what's going on.

The solution to the worlds' problems

--Common sense. Actually, any kind of sense would do.
--Most of the world's problems were and are caused by overinflated egos. Defend your position simply because it's your position. The real facts don't matter.

Semester Over Intern Begins

Whew! The semester is over. All the tension, anticipation, confusion has ended, the grades have been announced and I got A's. It was a semester where I somehow felt that I didn't do any work but to look back I learnt quite a bit. My algorithms course was good, the homeworks were a lot of work but I think it really cemented my understanding of the subject. I learnt some pretty interesting techniques like randomization. By introducing a little bit of uncertainity, you may get an answer that might be a little bit off, but you make things a whole lot faster in the process. I think I feel a lot more confident when I need to design an algorithm for a problem.
The other course that I did was Data Mining. I kind of felt that the course isn't too deep on fundamentals, it simply uses some existing statistical methods to analyze large amounts of data. A lot of it is similar to AI/ developing statistical models/ separating data statistically. I did some work in Bionformatics, it wasn't too technical a project but we are seeing if we can get some biological results and hopefully a publication. Data mining is an emergent area in Computer Science, so this course gave me a decent area of what's going on in it.
So, in conclusion it's been a decent semester- not too productive, not a total waste either. Hopefully, I can kick things up a bit next semester. I am done with most of my course requirements so I really want to take courses that interest me.
I leave for Philadelphia on the 19th of May with my internship starting on the 23rd of May. So, I have about a week to cool off before I leave.And, I might be heading back to India for a month in August so I am looking forward to that as well. I should make the most of it!

Chandramukhi

I shall start my treatise with one of the basic questions that has plagued mankind.

Why did the chicken cross the road?
No idea. But certainly not to see Chandramukhi.

Why did Rajni make this movie?
No idea. But I certainly hope that he didn't plan to see it as well.You know if he had some sense he could have taken his fat paycheck and saved himself some of the pain of watching the poor thing.

Why did I see the movie?
Because I am a graduate student.

Prelimnaries done I shall gone on to the story. It's about this house haunted by this dancer case who was killed by her king eons ago because she was sleeping with someone else. This is not to mention that the king was sleeping with her on the side in the first case.So there you have it a haunted joint. Now, cut to today.
(An aside, if only ppl didn't sleep with each other- imagine the amount of trauma the world will be saved off. Hitler probably went on to rend the world apart simply because he was short and ugly and had totally lost out on the competition in the soporific game. Ok, I am meandering too much, back to the rant.)
Rajni sar and Prabhu sar and their (actually Prabhu's) wife Jyotika decide to move in for kicks. Once they move in, strange things start happenening- stuff like Rajni flying 25mts to grab someone else's cup of coffee ( he alleges it was poisoned, he alleges), and fishtanks flying and trying to kill people (it probably got sick of the movie and wanted out too, just that someone was in the way). So finally, accusations fly thick and fast through the air. Who is the culprit? The ghost? Well, then you have a problem with getting the ghost to appear before court. And, how would you have a fight scene with a Ghost? Rajni would just crash straight through it/him/her. Well, it wasn't it was a frustrated maidservant who wasn't being well treated by the paati.
Moral of the story: Treat your maidservants with respect.
(Just kidding, the ending isn't that bad, it's worse.)

Life goes on

What have I done over the last few months:
1) I made a trip to Vancouver,Canada that was pretty nice. Met my uncle and cousins there.
2) Started jogging after a very long time. That was nice. Well, I might be running the Chicago marathon this year.
3) Would like to start playing tennis soon.
4) Going to Glaxo SmithKline for my internship.

Something Important..

Today I had an experience that further reinforced the fact that the only thing that you can do alone is in the toilet! ( This is actually a famous quote by the late Reliance Chairman, Dhirubai Ambani)
It was my turn today to present a paper at the reading group. I chose to present a paper on Phylogenetic Tree Construction. After, the paper I presented a couple of ideas that I thought could be converted into something practical. The ideas did seem very good to me. But, as I presented it to the group, different comments started flowing in and I realized that what I was taking up wasnt as easy as it looked. I got a new perspective on the problem and realized that I had to confront a lot of issues
1) I had to make my method hold up against all the existing work, current research in the field had some models to measure algorithms. My method had to measure up to all those modes. The inexperienced grad student that I am, it would be an extremely difficult task.
2) The project would be a reasonably long range project. Though in the end the idea might work out, the risk was pretty high. It would make a lot more sense to work on smaller, easier and well defined problems before moving into a task of this dimension.
These are things that I would have never realized on my own! You tend to get a bit carried away with the fact that you have thought of something interesting and become oblivious to the subtleities that decide if it's going to succeed or fail. I was thankful for the objective criticism that I recieved. I think I am going to provide the same kind of objective evaluation to other's ideas in the meetings!
Moral of the story: Listen to others. For your own good! Tell them what you think. For their own good!
